Conan Doyle and the Classic Conventions: R.I.P Part 1
Our group is focusing on the historical contexts of the detective genre and Conan Doyle's classical conventions. In our presentation, we briefly examine the rise of the detective genre during the late Victorian Era. We also introduce the conventions of the detective genre.

My Contributions:
For the RIP Seminar, our group is responsible for presenting about the classical conventions & Conan Doyle stories. I’m the team leader who is responsible for dividing the work equally for everyone in the group. First, I divided our presentation into 3 parts, and divided our big group into 3 sub-groups. Tin and I are responsible for the historical context of the detective genre. Lena and Wuchen are responsible for the conventions of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Sanchay and Dhruv are responsible for the conventions of other characters and the convention of plot.
As one of the person who is responsible for the historical context, I did my research on the scientific innovation during the Victorian Era as well as the appearance of the detective genre. For the historical context, I also researched about the law system during the Victorian Era, and the public safety at that time, where I started to dig into the crime, Jack the Ripper.
Before the seminar, our group gathered together on Tuesday afternoon to have a run-through presentation. We had the opportunity to practice our public speaking, as we gave each other feedbacks and helped each other master the materials that we are covering. During the seminar, everyone in our group will each present their parts; in addition to that I will also present the convention of other characters while one of my group mates will start us off with the introduction.

My Reflection:
From the RIP Seminar, I’ve learned many great things that I can take with me as I grow, I especially appreciated this opportunity that allowed me to better my public speaking skills. Throughout the quarter, we learned a lot about the mystery genre. And through the seminar, we concluded our learning with a summary of everything. I learned a little bit about the horror movie; however, I didn't clearly understand the convention of the horror genre as much as I strived to. Engagement is one of the habits of mind I practiced in this seminar. Evidently, engagement is one of the most important components for success. As it is almost finals’ week, everyone is very busy with papers and finals, their engagement in spending time and effort helped make this project possible. Flexibility is another habit of mind that I practiced. The audience is more than the size of our class. When I stand up and prepare to speak, I was scared, however, I tried to overcome my fear and adapt to the situation to produce a well-prepared speech, because I know practice makes perfect. I believe persistence is the third habit of mind that I practiced. Our presentation is about the classical phase of the detective genre, which involves many historical contexts. It is the material that we learned at the beginning of the quarter. The ability to recap and reflect what we've learned from the beginning to the end of the quarter is showcase through our preparation for the RIP seminar.
